What is Kybella?

Kybella is an injectable medication that targets and gets rid of fat cells under the chin, also known as submental fullness. Fat in this area can build up over time, especially in those who tend to gain more weight as they age, and it can also occur due to genetics.

How does Kybella work?

Kybella contains a synthetic form of a molecule called deoxycholic acid. This acid plays a role in breaking fat from foods down and absorbing it.

Kybella injections target and damage fat cells under the chin, so they no longer hold fat. The body eliminates these damaged cells naturally, resulting in permanent loss. The loss of these fat cells leads to a smoother chin and abdomen.

Who is a good candidate for Kybella?

Patients who have excess fat under the chin that they can’t get rid of generally make ideal candidates for Kybella, in addition to those who want to remove fat from the following areas:

• Bra fat
• Abs
• Fat pouches

Specific individuals, such as those with an infection in the treated area, shouldn't have this treatment.

You should also inform Dr. Patal about any underlying medical conditions you have or if you’re pregnant or breastfeeding. Make sure to mention any medications or supplements you’re taking as well.

What should I expect from Kybella treatments?

Is Kybella a safe way to get rid of fat?

Kybella is generally safe and well-tolerated but has a few risks. Serious side effects, which are very rare, include:

More common side effects include:

• Bruising and swelling in the treated area 
• Numbness in the treated area

Some patients also experience discomfort or redness, which are usually mild and temporary.
